Nestling under the White Horse, this site’s appeal is its mystical location near the Ridgeway. Facilities are basic: logs, lavatories and water. Heaven.

Number 2 Seagull Campsite
This tiny island, 2.4 km long and 800 m wide, is great for families as there are amazing beaches all around and no cars. Nearby Belvoir Bay is good for swimming. Pitch your own tent or hire one on site.
Number 3 Stowford Manor Farm
Located on a medieval, family-run farm, where the swimming at nearby Farleigh Weir is a big draw. You can buy cream teas with cream supplied by the farm’s Jersey cows and, with only 20 pitches, it’s never going to be too much of a bun fight.
Number 4 Spiers House
Run by the Forestry Commission, this is a fantastic base from which to explore the wild North York Moors National Park. There’s also pony trekking and an orienteering course nearby.
Number 5 Nantcol Waterfalls
Stunningly wild spot a mile from the Rhinog Mountains. It’s very basic: you use the river for washing and the local pub for the lavatory. There are brilliant circular walks and, another plus, you can light a fire.
